Old paradigm: Directional stability at high speeds, achieved by placing heavy components as near as possible to the front and back ends.
Car becomes like a dumbbell, heavy outside and light inside.
It has a high polar moment of inertia.
This makes the car resistant / sluggish to change.
Drivers back then compensated by drifting, basically breaking traction at the rear and thus having the rear end assist the front end turning the curve.
New paradigm:
Forget directional stability and go for grip.
All big components tightly packed near CG.
Biggest advantage:
Less polar moment of inertia = Car much nimbler
Further advantages:
— Better Acceleration and Braking
— Less weight
— Lower Car
— Better Aerodynamics
Ferrari’s F1 312T series from 1975-1980 reduced their polar moment of inertia further by turning their transmission by 90°
Nissan’s GT-R Le Mans car is mid engined yet the engine is infront of the driver.
Advantages:
Better Aerodynamics
Better weight distribution, the Nissan being Front wheel drive

which software are u using??
question, in race-simulators i've been having some issues with braking/understeer in lightweight mid engine cars. for some reason i think having too much of the weight on the rear in such a light car equals having not enough weight on the front wheels causing them to lock up very easily under heavy braking. i found this video because i was interested to see if my hypothesis was grounded but now i see you seem to have reason to believe a car with 50+% of the weight over the rear end will brake better? i was playing around with the ride height settings to see if dropping the front and raising the rear to get more weight on the front wheels would help and it did a little bit but it messed up the rear grip, the car became very twitchy coming out of corners and when correcting the oversteer it would often very quickly snap back causing a spin in the other direction. do you care to shine any light on this, i would like to hear your thoughts.
