We take our first look at the new 2023 BMW i7 sedan, getting all of the up-close details from contributer, Tom Moloughney.

The pinnacle of the BMW brand, the 7-Series, will soon be available without an internal combustion engine for the very first time, and it’s called the 2023 BMW i7 xDrive60. BMW’s new 7-series will also be available in the standard combustion form, and as a plug-in hybrid, for those not quite sure if they are ready for a pure EV but think they want to move on from ICE.

The new 7 utilizes BMW’s flexible Cluster Architecture — (CLAR) platform, which allows the i7 to be produced on the same manufacturing line as its ICE and PHEV brothers. Therefore the i7 doesn’t have a bespoke chassis, as is the case for the BMW iX.

It also doesn’t have a front storage compartment or «frunk». The BMW representatives at the first look event held last week at the NY Auto Show explained that was because the i7 is built alongside the ICE and PHEV 7-series and the components upfront don’t allow for a storage area.

But what about that huge space where the ICE normally would be? We couldn’t get a concise answer to that question. It’s clear by now that BMW doesn’t place much importance on their EVs having a front storage area because the i4, the iX and now the i7 doesn’t have one.

  1. Terrible front/rear designe and cockpit. iDrive 8 epic multimedia car system, but iDrive 7 have better cockpit designe and music/cinema cover to the right of the cockpit. Nice new auto doors and other innovation functions.
Why is BMW spoiling the best design ideas implemented in cars?
    How about 3d projection?
    P.S. 8k for a small display, is this a joke? Maybe 16k?

  2. Hopefully the 31.3” optional cinema display comes with a standard backup camera paired to a dedicated LCD rearview mirror video screen as its view will be blocked. It should automatically switch based on eye tracking and you speaking at the mirror, between mirror and LCD as you carry on a conversation with rear passengers and then return to driving needs of seeing out the back. Hopefully they increase the rear wheel steering up to 10° to manage all that extra space they added to it. Great job‼️

  3. Can't believe BMW would stoop to the current trend that half the auto industry is doing — the split headlight design. Why does everyone have to copy every latest trend? Especially with BMW who has a signature dual circular headlight design for decades.

  4. This sh1tshow should have been burned at birth. Only a mother would love this cancerous (no offence to cancer victims) scrutinised version of something that used to be an elegant beauty. I don’t get how this blinding design got approved, despite millions of former BMW fans bellowing to BMW to stop ruining their designs! BMW has to put out numerous videos explaining why they are flushing heritage down the drain! It is so ridiculous, and all for nothing. They have ruined the BMW design and only so that more Chinese people buy the cars! And guess what, all shipments to China have been stopped due to the current political circumstances!
