The 2019 Jetta will hit showrooms next month so take a look to see what’s new! A full redesign for the Mark 7 is underpinned by VW’s delightful MQB Platform that the Jetta now shares with the Atlas, Tiguan, and Golf models. The new Jetta feels spacious and comfortable with an interior punching above its weight class. My favorite new pieces of tech include the new 8 inch touch screen head unit working in tandem with the fully digital cluster (available on SEL trims); which now employs Volkswagen’s new Digital Cockpit, a variation of Audi’s virtual cockpit. Overall, the new Mark 7 2019 Jetta is impressive from all angles and constitutes a fantastic value for anyone looking into a compact sedan.

Additionally, I’d like to offer a HUGE thank you to Hall Imports of Brookfield, WI for making this review possible with this pre-production model!

  1. This car does not have an Independent Rear Suspension but has the cheaper Torsion Beam…perhaps the future GLI model will get the more sophisticated IRS…lots of hard plastic bits in the car and especially for the rear passengers…VW has to save money somewhere to pay cor Dieselgate…

  2. I just picked up a 2019 Jetta S with the manual transmission and so far pretty amazing for the price. Very impressive list of standard features. Why are so few of the younger buyers just not interested in a manual driving experience? Just saying I feel you are very wrong about the manual. Go drive one that is broken in so you can floor it and I think you will realize how good that torque feels with manual behind it. Plus at $19k sticker it is the best value and I think one of the few manual transmissions available in the US at that price. Still great reaview video sir.

  3. UPDATED AS THE LIST KEEPS GROWING — Why I prefer my 2017 Jetta SEL over the 2019 (based on reviewer / driver comments / reports):

    • more engine choices for 2017, mine has the 1.8 L engine
    • Independent rear suspension with 2017 gone for 2019 (back to torsion beam)
    • True exhaust outlets for 2017 vs. Fake exhaust outlets with 2019
    • Adjustable center arm rest with 2017 gone for 2019
    • Height adjustment for front passenger seat gone for 2019
    • Adjustable rear headrests gone with 2019
    • Rear deck more glare resistant; glare reports for 2019
    • Damped glove box with inner upper shelf gone for 2019
    • Engine shutoff when stopping with 2019, air turns off etc., (does have an off switch)
    * Solid moon roof slide cover for 2017 gone for 2019 (flimsy cloth material)
    * A Pillar material covering gone for 2019 (solid plastic)
    • more touch screen functions / interface with 2019 reportedly results in unwanted connections when bumped
    * 2019 Seating is very bench like, some reports it was less comfy
    * trunk pass-thru behind rear arm rest gone with 2019
    * 2019 center console intrudes on drivers right knee room
    * 2019 eight speed transmission gets a bit confused /sloppy (could be a break-in issue)
    * And, trunk lid fully opens with 2017 vs. needing further lifting with 2019
In all fairness I have not driven the 2019 so these comments if they are all accurate may not be important for some new buyers. More soft touch surfaces on 2019 front doors, and MQB platform may provide a better and more quiet ride experience, etc.

  4. You stated that the 2019 Jetta GLI will have the same 2.0 engine 220 HP 258 ft. lb of torque as the current GTI. How do you know that it won't be the same engine in the current 2018 Jetta GLI that is the 2.0 with 210 HP and 207 ft. lb of torque? Did your source have real inside information or are you guessing?

  5. I wish it looked more sporty and chiseled like the gti. The shape of this redesign looks too plain, vanilla, blandi lile the taillights. But, im not a fan of the headlight or grille at all. It just looks way too basic. They should take a pags from Toyota and develope a more sporty design like the corolla sedan and hatch. Or, tbey should bring the design of the vw scirocco to this jetta and make turn it bacl into the car every teen and young adult wants to own. Hopefully, they start offerinh 4 door coupes to offer sporty options as well. Lile, maybe a baby arteon, 4 seried gran cpupe competitor, etc.
