The ability to soak up potholes and waft along the interstate is the Murano’s best attribute, and its strong braking performance at our test track outperformed all others in this comparison. The engine is muted at cruising speeds but sounds rough under heavy throttle.
Acceleration
Getting up to speed takes little effort, and the 3.5-liter V-6’s 260 ponies shuttle the Murano along easily, although throttle response could be more immediate. The continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) isn’t our favorite method of swapping ratios, and in the Murano it lets the revs hang high under heavy throttle. This brings out the unrefined side of the engine’s nature and amplifies it; it does, however, help provide more instantaneous power for passing.
Ride, Handling, and Steering
With a suspension tuned for comfort, the Murano makes easy work of road trips, and its suspension damps out even the roughest of potholes to deliver a smooth ride. Encounter a twisty road and the Murano will safely deliver you to the next intersection, but it won’t entertain you along the way. The steering delivers good highway stability but is dull and uncommunicative on meandering two-lanes.
Braking
The Murano’s brake pedal feels slightly soft underfoot at first but firms up after about a half-inch of travel. On our test track, the Murano delivered excellent stopping power resulting in a best-in-test emergency braking distance.
