2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC63: The Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class SUVs are already strong performers, especially the AMG GLC 43. Still, there’s always room for more when it comes to Mercedes-Benz, and especially when you’re dealing with AMG, its high-performance division. No reasonable shopper would say a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 under the hood of the GLC is a must-have, but that’s exactly what you get with the 2018 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63. The specs are impressive, with the standard SUV and coupe versions churning out 469 horsepower and the GLC 63 S coupe producing 503 hp. Mercedes estimates the SUV and coupe will reach 60 mph in only 3.9 seconds, while the S coupe should take only 3.7 seconds.

The wonderfully burly growl from the V8 should be equally satisfying. As expected, the upgrades don’t stop at shoehorning the bigger engine between the front wheels. Mercedes’ 4Matic+ performance-tuned all-wheel-drive system is standard, as are items such as an air-ride sport suspension, a mechanical limited-slip differential and AMG’s signature vertical grille. On the inside, faux suede upholstery and racy stitching add a sporting flair to match the performance. Is all of this really necessary? Of course not, but we’d be lying if we said we weren’t excited to drive one. As Mercedes’ first midsize SUV to get the AMG treatment, the GLC 63 will be playing catch-up with other high-performance rivals such as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio, Maserati Levante, Porsche Macan, Range Rover Sport and Tesla Model X.
