2018 BMW 4-series Gran Coupe: Sleek Four-Door Tweaked: In BMW’s mushrooming model range, clarity of purpose is getting harder to find. Take, for example, the 4-series Gran Coupe. It’s a coupe; it must be. It says so right in the name. Besides, it’s an even-numbered model, which in BMW nomenclature means coupe. But it’s also a four-door, so most people will think of it as a sedan. It’s closely related to the 3-series sedan, albeit with a lower and sleeker roofline. And while in profile it appears to have a distinct trunk, the lid actually incorporates the rear glass, thus making it a hatchback. So the 4-series Gran Coupe is at once a coupe, a sedan, and a hatchback. Don’t expect the changes to this model for 2018 to do anything to alleviate the confusion—mostly because they’re so minor. Still, we’ll detail them here: Starting up front, the headlights are new. Standard on all models are LED high- and low-beams—adaptive headlights are available—and the new lights have a more hexagonal appearance. Sticking with the theme, the fog lights are also LED units, now located within a slightly reshaped lower fascia. For Luxury Line models, the lower air intake stretches across the full width of the car and is accented with chrome, while the Sport Line version has a more sculpted air intake that is divided into three sections. Moving to the side, there are four new wheel designs in 18- and 19-inch sizes, while at the rear, the bumper is restyled, and the LED taillight graphics are different. The most obvious giveaway that a 4-series Gran Coupe is a 2018 model will be if it’s painted Sunset Orange or Snapper Rocks Blue, since those two colors—which are exclusive to the 4-series—weren’t offered before. New colors also are featured inside, with Dakota leather now offered in Midnight Blue, Ivory White, and Cognac. An Executive package brings a virtual instrument cluster; its layout varies depending on the drive mode selected. And on cars equipped with the navigation option, the iDrive logic has been revised, with the central screen displaying six tiles that group system functions, three on the main screen and three on the secondary screen. Mechanically, things are mostly as before. There is the 430i, with a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four, and the 440i, with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six. Both models are available with either rear- or all-wheel drive. An eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual (yes!) can be had with either engine, although you can’t get the stick with all-wheel drive on the 430i. BMW said the suspension—be it the standard suspension, the M Sport setup, or the adaptive suspension (code for variable damping)—has been firmed up for 2018; the steering also has been tweaked. Since the 4-series Gran Coupe joined the lineup in mid-2014 as a junior-size take on the body style that made its debut on the 6-series, BMW said its sales have grown to equal two-door coupe and convertible sales combined. So, even in the fog of BMW’s overlapping models, it appears that buyers are finding their way to this car.
