2018 Audi RS5: Two Turbos, Much Power, Available Hatchback: What It Is: Audi’s monster version of the new A5 coupe. It’s powered by a furious twin-turbocharged V-6, fitted with a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system, and comes wearing a wide body that evokes, for some of us, the original Sport Quattro rally cars. For the first time, there will be a four-door RS5 Sportback; the RS5 cabriolet is gone. Europe gets an RS4 Avant with the same powertrain, but due to the U.S. market’s aversion to wagons, don’t expect it to appear on these shores. Why It Matters: The Audi brand has been suffering from two things: safe, evolutionary styling and the diesel scandal that engulfed the entire Volks­wagen Group. It needs nothing more than sexy new product, and the RS5 should prove that the brand hasn’t lost its touch. Platform: The RS5 is based on the modular, longitudinal-­engine MLB Evo platform, shared with the A4, the Q5/Q7, the next-gen A6/A7/A8, and a number of VW Group models such as the China-market VW Phideon sedan. Powertrain: A 444-hp version of the twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 that also powers the Porsche Panamera 4S. Peak torque is rated at 443 pound-feet, and the output routes to all four wheels through a ZF-supplied eight-speed automatic.Competition: BMW M4, Cadillac ATS-V coupe, Lexus RC F, Mercedes-AMG C63. What Might Go Wrong: The RS5’s exterior design might fail to push Audi’s design language forward. Estimated Arrival and Price: Late this year as a 2018 model with a starting price just over $70K; the Sportback will come a half-year later.

A whole host of sporty features will be fitted to this new model’s cabin to make sure it stands out from the standard A5. Swathes of black leather, RS logos embossed in the front headrests and a flat-bottomed steering wheel all help it feel significantly more special than the standard car while an optional RS package – featuring contrasting red stitching and Alcantara trim – and a Nappa Leather seat option with distinctive honeycomb-stitching are also available. The new RS5 is 74mm longer than the old car and serves up slightly more rear legroom as a result. Unfortunately, headroom will still be fairly limited and climbing into the back won’t be made any easier by the rather bulky sports seats fitted up front.A special RS version of Audi’s Virtual Cockpit replaces analogue dials with a digital display while the MMI Plus navigation system adds an easy-to-use touchpad, a WiFi hotspot and Apple Car Play and Android Auto connectivity as standard. The all-new 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 produces 443hp and much more torque than the last car. The optional dynamic package allows for a 0-62mph time of 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 174mph. On average, the RS5 can return 32.5mpg – a noticeable efficiency gain over the outgoing model thanks to having shed 60kg. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive. Audi also offers the car with adjustable dampers, allowing drivers to switch between a soft ride when driving around town or a stiffer ride for more spirited driving by flicking a few options on the infotainment system.
