1993 Chevy c1500 350 Piston Slap/Rod Knock

I bought a 1993 Chevy Silverado a couple of weeks ago, it has a rebuilt 350. I’ve experienced a knocking like sound coming from the engine, but I’m not quite sure what it is. (Truck was running cold in the video) I know for sure that the timing needs an adjustment, but I wouldn’t think that bad timing would cause this knocking. The knocking can’t really be heard from inside the cab. The truck is hard to start at times but it’ll go. It tries to die when you come to a stop and i’m always left applying break and gas to keep it going.
I need some help identifying what the cause of this knocking is and how to fix it. Thanks guys!

UPDATE: I drove the truck today and sounded even worse, kind of like a fork in a blender. After the drive, it didn’t seem as bad (at idle) but you could still hear it when you lifted the hood

  1. I read a comment down below u said the person who bought the truck drives it everyday ? Do you know if they fixed it first I hope so ….

  2. change out your temp sencors. There are 2 one on driver side next to spark plus. the other is on top behind compressor. If those are bad and I think they are. This should make truck run alot better. I have a 1993 chevy 350 v8. If you need tips hit me up

  3. You sound like Chester Bennington, lol.

  4. sounds like forged piston knock from cold weather like my turbo 350 it should go away when warm let it idle and dont gas it when you start it the pistons have to warm up. after the motor has warmed if it still knocks its the hydrolic lifter hold down bolt has backed out, ive had this happen before.

  5. Thank you. I have a noise currently in my 350 and was concerned if it was a rod knock. My noise sounds nothing like this.

  6. well you bought a piece of shit. throw it into the garbage and end of story

  7. Piston slap is a result of cold forged Pistons, I would drop the oil pan and check the rod end caps to see if there is any play in them. It could also be a valve tick, if it's not either of those then it's timing/fuel related.

  8. dude!!!! my '85 c10 350 v8 is doin the same shit…… i jus dont have the luxury of spending $2500 to buy a new engine and pay mechanics for half ass labor, or the tools to do it myself……

  9. timing is off and that is a piston slap

  10. shoulda got a ford they are built tough

  11. i had a buddy put thicker weight oil in his truck… the knocking went away

  12. i had a buddy put thicker weight oil in his truck… the knocking went away

  13. i never had something like this, ive owned over 20 cars all used, but man, this kind of stuff only happens when engines are not lubed properly, and or abuse meaning to muching flooring, engine dont like that, if you treat a car as you treat a woman, smooth, straight, and with confidence, then you wont get shit like this happening all the cars ive owned were between 1979-1998 it aint a drag strip bro

  14. If the motor was recently rebuilt, the rod and main bearings are most likely on the loose side. 10W-40 or 20-50 may have been required.

  15. time for a ls swap. you got a clapped out 350 look at all your oil… it's outside of the engine. but piston slap and wrong carb jets/tune

  16. U realize u could have gotten the engine rebuilt and tuned right I would have been a good truck

  17. Saw a few comments,1 of Em saying "drive it 2 the junkyard", THROW AWAY GENERATION!! EVERYTHING CAN BE FIXED! 2 BETTER THEN NEW!! I WOULD DO A FULL REBUILD!! A truck is a valuable asset! DO A COMPRESSION TEST ON EACH CYLINDER, check fuel & spark & then, OPEN IT UP & CHECK TOLERANCES.1 GUY HAD GOOD ADVICE ABOUT CHECKING UR END CAPS/TOLERANCES. koodo's 2 that person! someone who's willing 2 put in some swet equity!!! world needs more people willing to go the extra mile!!!! I'd rather fix my heap then not have a car at all….

  18. Have u checked all of ur value lines? Also what u said about timing, better check it or simply replace ur timing chain & tentioner.or maybe there's something wrong with vacuum/ timing? let me know what the problem turns out 2b? probably a stretched or worn out timing parts, replace em & she'll be as good as new!!!

  19. that truck has 300,000 miles retire the old bitch

  20. you skipped timing was all . that motor was solid gold. less than 1 cm off timing

  21. this engine needs 20w50 and lucas hd oil stabilizer

  22. "Rocker chatter" …most likely due to someone changing the cam & lifters but did not know how to adjust the valve lash and set the timing correctly.

  23. Put on the Craigslist add has hot cam, runs like a raped ape on bath salts

  24. Try timing it might be out of adjustment !

  25. I would has just pulled the distributor timming Advanced wire

  26. How to change a knock sensor 1993 chevy 350

  27. A bad one can have it run like dirt but a bad timming chain or out of time one could do the same

  28. That sounds like a spun rod bearing. Is why I don't buy chevy no more. There junk.

  29. First thing the timing is way off
